This book was written by Fred W. Dutton and is a history of his time at sea on the Lakes beginning around 1920.
Among the many books I have read about the Great Lakes, this one really stands out. Maybe it stands out because I know the nomenclature of these boats, having worked aboard many of them while they were under construction or being repaired at the shipyard. Perhaps too because I was a wheelsman for some years aboard destroyers.
Mr. Dutton writes a simple easy reading book which, when understanding the make-up of a laker, puts you in the wheelhouse, on deck, in the engine room, in the galley and also gives you a washing down of the Great Lakes fury when Mother Nature decides to have a bad hair day.
